Frequently Asked Questions

faq faqQ: What's this all about?
A: Racing 2 Save Lives is a unique organization which allows motorcycle racing and track-riding enthusiasts to give back to our communities, by doing what we love - riding motorcycles!

Q: Who benefits from the donations?
A: The donations we raise benefit children's charities of different kinds.  We also occasionally give smaller contributions to charities we feel are worthy, including those involved in track safety.

Q: How does the event work?
A: We will run three blocks per day, from 8:30-11:30am, 12:30-3:30pm, and 3:30-6:30pm. We also break up those blocks into street and race sessions to maintain a safe track experience for everyone. While you are welcome to ride by yourself, we definitely encourage you to team up with someone! This ensures you have help if you need it, and makes sure we have a full track for the entire event! We will also have non-riding activities including classes and clinics, autograph sessions with celebrity pro riders, and a whole lot more!

faqQ: What do I need to do to ride?
A: We created R2SL with the intent of having as many riders as possible. You do not need to be a licensed roadracer to participate, however you must be able to demonstrate safe operation of your motorcycle at all times. We ask that you only bring sport or sport-touring, or Motard-style bikes (Race bikes are ok!). Nothing against the cruiser folks, they're just a bit hard to toss around the track and may present a safety issue. Pocketbikes may be fun in the pits, but are a definite no-no on the track.

Q: Can I just show up whenever I feel like it?
A: While we certainly won't turn you away if you show up out of the blue, we definitely encourage you to sign up ahead of time. It also helps us staff accordingly and assign the necessary resources if we know you're coming, and walk-in registrations will have to pay an additional $25 over people who pre-register online.

faqQ: How do I sign up?
A: Online pre-registration is available now, and is also a great way to save some money!  If you pre-register for all days and sessions we give you the last session free, and you save $25 over people who don't register until they get to the track.  If you register online you can choose to pay at the time of registration using our electronic payment option, or just bring your donations to the track with you.  Donations can be made at the track in cash, check, or credit card.  Pre-registration also lets you collect pledges towards your donation using our online system.

Q: Do I need to "prep" my bike?
A: We do require some bike preparation before you'll be able to ride. The first and most important requirement is that no antifreeze (Glycol-based coolant) will be allowed! Straight water or use of a non-Glycol additive is allowed. We will have mechanics at the event that can help you flush your cooling system if you need it. We also recommend you take your mirrors off, though you can fold them in as well (you'll need to do one or the other). We also recommend you tape up and disconnect your lights, and tires and brakes must be in good condition (or you can purchase these items from our on-track vendors). Full tech requirements will be emailed to every registered participant.

Q: Can I ride as an individual or part of a team?
A: It would be most beneficial to create a team of riders so you can raise as much money as possible to help our charities; riding in a team is also a lot more fun! However you are more than welcome to come ride by yourself - we look forward to seeing you either way.

faqQ: Can I wear shorts, a tank-top, and flip-flops?
A: No. Only full track gear will be allowed. One-piece leather or textile suits (or two-piece suits which ZIP together - no duct tape please), motorcycle-specific boots (no hiking boots or otherwise, and must extend fully above the ankle), gloves which extend over the wrists, and a SNELL/DOT-approved full face helmet in good condition are required. We also strongly recommend the use of a back protector or other armor.

Q: Will my bike have to go through Tech Inspection?
A: Yes. EVERY bike that passes the track entrance will go through a cursory tech inspection. We will check your cooling system for the presence of antifreeze, and would like to catch leaky oil and loose parts before they cause an hour of cleanup (or worse, a crash). These requirements are necessary for everyone's safety, so please make sure your bike is well prepared.

Q: How many sessions can I ride?faq
A: As many as you want! You may ride multiple days, and even multiple sessions on the same day. Take the time off of work, we want to see you at our events to have a great time raising money for a wonderful cause!

Q: Can I ride all day long if I feel up to it?
A:You can, however we need to caution you - long periods of track riding can be extremely demanding, both physically and mentally. While we want you to ride as much as possible for our charities, we really must stress the importance of taking proper rest and staying hydrated. We'd rather have you come in for a break, than push yourself too hard. We will have other activities besides riding as well, and encourage you to take advantage of as much as you can.

Q: How much does it cost to participate?
A: Minimum donations will apply, which are based on how many sessions you register for. A full cost breakdown is available on the signup page. Each rider will also receive a t-shirt to commemorate their contribution to the event, and we encourage all licensed roadracers to sign up for the R2SL Race Team as well.

faqQ: I don't have cash but really want to ride, now what?
A: Collect "pledges" from friends, family, sponsors, neighbors, employers, etc! You'd be amazed how many people want to help you raise money for children's charities, and we make it as easy as possible by letting them pledge towards your donation through our website if you pre-register.

Q: Will gas, oil, tires, etc be available?
A: We will have full tire support available on-site, likely from multiple vendors.  We'll have pump gas and VP Race Fuel available at MMP, and vendors for other odds and ends as well..

Q: Is there going to be media coverage?
A: You bet! We have already been receiving mention in several local and national publications, and expect some pretty serious media to cover what we accomplish. Make sure your bike is shiny for Racing 2 Save Lives, you never know where your picture might end up!

Q: I don't race or ride motorcycles, but think it is a wonderful idea. How can I participate?faq
A: Volunteer your time, donate money, sponsor the event with money or products, join the organizational committee, and tell your friends!
